Why do creator payment accounts have age requirements?

Payment providers set age rules for the person legally responsible for the account; having a large audience does not remove those rules. Stripe's published rule is explicit: "You must be at least 13 years old to create a Stripe account. If you are under 18, a legal guardian must assume the role of owner of your account" (Stripe Support — age requirement to create a Stripe account).

Under Stripe's published rule, a 15-year-old may be involved in creator activity, but the guardian — not the 15-year-old — owns the Stripe account and accepts its obligations. The underlying reason is legal capacity: in most U.S. states a contract signed by a minor is voidable, because the law presumes people under the age of majority lack full capacity to contract on their own. Age rules differ by program, so the answer depends on which service actually pays you. Two of the largest in-app monetization programs simply exclude minors. Instagram Subscriptions requires a creator to "be 18 years or older" and to hold a professional account with at least 10,000 followers. How can a minor get paid for creator work?

Google's YouTube Partner Program eligibility page states that a creator must "be at least 18 years old, or have a legal guardian older than 18 years of age who can handle your payments via AdSense". Google AdSense supplies the mechanics in its own words: "If you are not yet 18, you may have a parent or guardian sign up for AdSense using their own Google Account," and payments are then made to the adult responsible for the site or channel. Twitch takes the consent route rather than the ownership route: Twitch states that streamers aged 13–17 may join the Twitch Affiliate Program "with parental or guardian consent and supervision". Patreon sets the same floor of 13, stating that "young creators on Patreon must be at least 13 years old and have the permission of a parent or guardian". Twitch builds the consent step into onboarding itself: "If you are over the age of 13 but under the age of 18, this section will ask your parent or legal guardian to agree to the Monetized Streamer Agreement for you". Neither Twitch nor Patreon states that the minor may own the payout account, so who actually holds that account still depends on the payment processor's own age rule.

A guardian-managed account is not a universal workaround, because it exists only where the platform and the payment processor both publish one. Families should agree in advance on who controls the account, where payouts are deposited, and how earnings are handled. Taxes follow the money regardless of the creator's age.
