Creator Monetization

Do Followers Need to Create an Account to Pay a Creator?

No. A follower can pay a creator as a guest with just an email and a card. Here is exactly what checkout collects, why an email is required, and when creating a free account actually helps.

Get paid for this β€” with Brillay

Would a follower make up a password just to send you $5? Many close the tab first. On Brillay there's no follower account to create: an email and a card, paid as a guest, and the tip or question is yours before the impulse fades.

Brillay is a link in your bio where followers pay you directly for:

TipsPaid QuestionsGoalsCustom WorkPersonalized Videos

A login is one more thing to remember; a membership is one more thing to cancel. A Brillay follower gets neither β€” one guest payment for a Tip, a Paid Question, a custom request, a Personalized Video or a Goal, and they're done.

No monthly fee, you only pay a small platform fee when you get paid.

No, a follower does not need to create an account to pay a creator on Brillay. Checkout collects an email address for the receipt, a name or @social handle so the creator knows who sent the request, and card details β€” then payment. A free follower account is optional and only adds one thing: past purchases listed in one place. Tips let followers send a one-time thank-you, with nothing for you to deliver and no membership for them to join.

A "create an account" wall in the middle of a purchase is one of the most measurable reasons people close the tab. Baymard Institute, which has tracked checkout usability for over a decade, reports a 70.22% average documented online shopping cart abandonment rate for 2026, calculated across 50 separate studies (Baymard Institute, "50 Cart Abandonment Rate Statistics 2026"). Baymard names forced signup as one of the drivers:

"Mandatory account creation remains a major barrier, causing 19% of users to drop out." β€” Baymard Institute, "How to Reduce Cart Abandonment"

That kind of drop-off matters most on small, impulsive purchases β€” for example, a hypothetical $5 tip or a $20 paid question. You set a fixed price for each offer. Brillay's fee schedule for the price you set is published on the pricing page.

Does a follower have to sign up before paying a creator?

No. A follower completes a Brillay purchase without an account. Brillay's product documentation states that followers pay without an account by card through Stripe, with no Brillay account to create and no app to install (how it works). Creators can start without applying or meeting a follower minimumβ€”even with a small audience.

Speed is the reason that default matters. Capterra's 2022 Online Shopping Survey, published April 6, 2022, found that 66% of consumers expect online checkout to take four minutes or less, and 28% expect it to take two minutes or less (Capterra, "Your Online Checkout Process Should Take 4 Minutes or Less").

Followers can pay without creating an account for Tips, Paid Questions, Custom Work, Personalized Videos, and Goals. Followers pay upfront; you can decline a request. You set the price and, where relevant, the reply time or delivery time; no follower account is needed to complete any of them.

What information does a follower actually have to give at checkout?

A follower gives three things: an email address, a name or @social handle, and card details entered into Stripe's payment form. There is no password field, no username, and no saved billing profile. Brillay never receives the full card number, because the card inputs are hosted by Stripe rather than by Brillay.

Three fields is unusually short by ecommerce standards. Baymard Institute's checkout benchmark database records that the average US checkout flow contains 23.48 form elements displayed to users by default, against an ideal flow of 12–14 form elements.

The email is required because it is how the receipt and any order updates get delivered. Stripe's documentation confirms that payment receipts are sent automatically by email once a charge succeeds, independent of whether the payer holds any merchant account (Stripe: Receipts and paid invoices).

Checkout fieldRequired?Why it's collected

Why does checkout ask for an email if there's no account?

An email is required because the receipt, the creator's reply, and every status update are delivered there β€” an email is a delivery route, not an account. Under Brillay's privacy policy, transactional emails go through Resend, and a follower's email and personal data stay private.

That distinction is not academic, because shoppers hedge against it. Capterra's 2022 Online Shopping Survey found that 75% of consumers use a burner email account for online shopping, largely to avoid the marketing that follows account registration. A follower should enter a real email address because Brillay emails the receipt and the private link or update needed to view a written answer, video, or Custom Work delivery.

An account implies a persistent login a person is expected to remember and return to. An email for a receipt is a one-time detail tied to a single purchase, closer to what a follower already hands over when buying a physical item online.

Why do so many other sites still force account creation?

Most sites require accounts to support repeat-purchase marketing, saved payment methods, and loyalty programs β€” payment itself never requires one. That tradeoff earns its keep for a grocery app a customer reorders from weekly. It earns much less on a single small payment to a creator, where the signup step can cost more than the purchase is worth.

Capterra measured how expensive that step is:

"A full 82% of consumers have decided against an online purchase because the account registration process was too complicated." β€” Capterra, "Your Online Checkout Process Should Take 4 Minutes or Less", published April 6, 2022

The same Capterra survey found that 43% of consumers prefer to use checkout with no account when making an online purchase. Even so, Baymard Institute's ecommerce UX benchmark found that 62% of sites fail to make "checkout with no account" the most prominent option on the account-selection step. Brillay's checkout defaults to guest, with the account option offered as a secondary, opt-in link.

Can a follower still get a receipt or a refund without an account?

Yes. The receipt is emailed to the address entered at checkout, and a refund request is tied to the order, not to a login. Brillay's Purchases, Support & Refunds policy tells followers to contact the creator from the secure order page or receipt for delivery help or a refund question. Paid Questions have one written reply, while Personalized Videos and Custom Work each have one delivery.

The same Brillay policy states that ordinary refunds are decided and initiated by the creator, and that refund timing is controlled by Stripe, the customer's bank, and the payment method, so a refund may take several business days to appear after Stripe confirms it. None of those steps reference account credentials. See how creators handle refunds for personalized services for what the process looks like from the creator's side.

What does creating a free follower account actually add?

A free follower account puts paid requests, creator replies, tips, and goals across creators in one view, instead of separate email receipts. It does not unlock a lower price, a faster reply, or an offer type a guest cannot buy.

A follower supporting several creators may prefer that history in one place. A supporter sending a $3 Tip or a follower ordering one $35 Personalized Video can pay once without joining a membership. You can put both offers, along with your other offers, behind one Brillay link. Both paths reach the same checkout, the same receipt, and the same order.

Is it safe to pay without creating an account?

Guest checkout uses the same payment security as account checkout. Card details reach Stripe's hosted fields either way, so account status and payment safety are separate questions. Stripe's PCI compliance guide states that Checkout, Stripe.js and Elements host card data inputs in an iframe on Stripe's domain, so card information never touches the business's servers (Stripe).

In Stripe's own words, those hosted inputs mean "your customers' card information never touches your servers". Brillay takes card payments and pays creators out through Stripe, and Stripe's integration security guide describes payment information going directly to Stripe without passing through the business's servers. Guest checkout removes a signup step while keeping the same payment protection.

Frequently asked questions

Does a follower need a Brillay account to send a Tip or a Paid Question?

No. Followers pay by card as guests, using an email and a name or @social handle.

Will a follower be asked to make up a password to check out?

No. A follower pays as a guest, and account creation happens only through the optional sign-in link.

If a follower doesn't create an account, how do they get their receipt?

The receipt goes automatically to the email entered at checkout, the same way it would for a signed-in follower. Stripe sends payment receipts by email once a charge succeeds, regardless of the payer's account status (Stripe: Receipts and paid invoices).

Does skipping account creation affect refunds or support?

No. Followers can ask for order help or request a refund from the secure order page or receipt without signing in. See how creators handle refunds for personalized services for the creator-side view.

Is there any purchase that requires a follower account on Brillay?

No. Every offer type β€” Tips, Paid Questions, Custom Work, Personalized Videos, and Goals contributions β€” supports checkout with no account the same way.
