Gaming coaches make money through hourly sessions sold on marketplaces like Metafy or Fiverr, one-off VOD reviews and rank-up plans, ad and subscription revenue if they also stream, brand sponsorships, and paid questions or services sold directly from their own bio link. Actual take-home pay is gross earnings minus each platform's fee and the coach's own prep time. Paid Questions let a follower pay upfront to ask one private question, and you send one written reply on your own time — no live call or scheduling.
A "gaming coach" covers a wide range of setups: a ranked player answering questions in a Discord server, a former pro running structured VOD reviews on a coaching marketplace, and a streamer who folds coaching into a content business. Each path has a different fee structure and a different relationship to the coach's existing audience.
What are the main ways gaming coaches earn money?
Gaming coaches earn from five documented sources: marketplace coaching sessions, VOD reviews and rank-up plans sold direct, streaming revenue paid under Twitch and YouTube revenue shares, negotiated brand sponsorships, and direct client payments taken from a bio link. Marketplace and direct work bill per deliverable, while streaming and sponsorship income follow platform rules and per-deal terms. A Brillay link works before Affiliate eligibility and after a stream ends, taking a question or one-time support payment from a guest whenever a viewer sees it.
| Income source | How payment works | What sets the terms |
|---|---|---|
| Coaching marketplaces (Metafy, Fiverr, similar) | The student books and pays through the marketplace | Metafy Core deducts 12% + $1.79 per transaction from a coach's earnings, capped at 30% of earnings (Metafy Help Center) |
| Direct DM-based coaching | A student pays by app before or after an informal session | No built-in scope, price, or delivery record |
| VOD reviews and written rank-up plans | A client pays a set price for a defined deliverable | The coach sets the price and delivery time |
| Streaming subs, ads, and Bits | Viewers pay the platform, which pays out per its published revenue share | Twitch's baseline subscription share is 50/50 on net revenue (Twitch Official Blog) |
| Sponsorships and brand deals | A brand pays for placement, review, or an ongoing partnership | Negotiated per deal; Twitch, YouTube, and Metafy each publish a revenue share or commission but none publishes a sponsorship price list |
| Direct client payments from a bio link | A client pays a creator-set price for a question, shoutout, or service | Brillay charges an 8% platform fee when a follower pays for work and 5% on tips and goals, with payment processing deducted separately (brillay.com/pricing, policy as published September 2, 2026) |
How much should I charge when clients keep coming to me with gaming questions?
Paid single-session gaming coaching on Metafy clusters near $27. Across 24 public Metafy coach pages read on September 2, 2026, 88 paid single-session listings ranged from $3.99 to $150, with a median of $27 and a mean of $30.95 (original Brillay reading of public Metafy coach pages). Every coach page in that sample is linked below.
Method, so the sample can be re-run: the first eight coach pages listed on each of metafy.gg/valorant/sessions, metafy.gg/rocket-league/sessions, and metafy.gg/league-of-legends/sessions were read in full on September 2, 2026. A listing was counted only if it was publicly enabled, delivered exactly one session, and had a price above $0; free consultations, free trials, multi-session bundles, and multi-week training plans were excluded. The figures are asking prices published by coaches, not settled sales data — Metafy does not publish coach earnings, and coaches add, reprice, and retire listings continuously, so a re-run on a later date will not return an identical sample.

Two published guides give a wider band as a cross-check, and both are secondary sources rather than wage surveys: a League of Legends coaching directory guide reports a $10–$170 hourly range depending on qualifications and role, and an esports outlet that bought Tekken lessons reported typical Metafy hourly prices of $20 to $60. Neither figure describes what any specific coach earns.
What percentage does a coaching marketplace like Metafy take?
Metafy Core takes 12% of a coach's earnings plus $1.79 per transaction, capped so the combined cut never exceeds 30% of earnings on a transaction. Metafy Pro instead charges $99 per month, or $69 per month billed annually, and lets the coach keep 100% of sales.
There's no monthly fee, but Metafy takes a 12% + $1.79 (per transaction) cut of what you earn, capped so it never exceeds 30% of your earnings. — Metafy Help Center, "Account Types: User vs Core vs Pro"
Fiverr charges its coaches on the seller side and its students on the buyer side. On the seller side, Fiverr's Payment Terms of Service state that each completed order credits the seller's account with earnings equal to 80% of the purchase amount, which is a 20% commission on a gaming coach's gig revenue (Fiverr Payment Terms of Service). On the buyer side, the same terms state that, as of September 2025, Gig service fees are 5.5% of the purchase amount plus a US$3.50 small-order fee on purchases under US$200 (Fiverr Payment Terms of Service). A coach selling a $40 Fiverr VOD review therefore keeps $32 before tax, while the student is billed $45.70. Listed as Custom Work on your own Brillay page, the same VOD review sells at the price you set, arrives with the student's brief, and is paid upfront before you start.
Marketplace commissions of this kind buy discovery, scheduling, dispute handling, and payments — a bundle worth more to a coach with no audience than to one whose students already follow them.
How much do gaming coaches earn from streaming?
Streaming income is set by platform revenue shares rather than by the creator. Twitch's baseline subscription split is 50/50 on net revenue, with legacy premium deals keeping 70/30 on the first $100,000 of subscription revenue. YouTube publishes separate shares for long-form video and for Shorts.
For subscriptions, we use a baseline revenue share of 50/50 on the net revenue from those earnings. — Dan Clancy, Twitch President, "A Letter from Twitch President Dan Clancy on Subscription Revenue Shares", September 21, 2022
On YouTube, creators receive a revenue share of "55% for long-form videos and 45% for Shorts" from the distributed pool (YouTube Official Blog). YouTube also states that beginning February 1, 2027, creators need 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days to be eligible for ads and subscription revenue sharing on Shorts. For Bits spent inside Twitch Extensions, Twitch's help center states the streamer earns 80% of 1 U.S. cent per Bit used (Twitch Help Center).
The practical difference for a coach: streaming income scales with audience size and watch time, while a coaching payment is priced per deliverable and does not depend on any revenue share.
How much do sponsorships pay gaming creators?
Sponsorship pay for gaming creators is negotiated per deal, so no reliable "average sponsorship rate" exists. What is documented is category spend: the IAB projects US creator ad spend at $37 billion in 2025, up 26% year over year, and $44 billion in 2026. Individual gaming coaches are not surveyed separately.
The same IAB report puts creator advertising at $13.9 billion in 2021 and $29.5 billion in 2024, meaning US creator ad spend more than doubled over three years. Growing category spend does not translate into a predictable per-deal rate for an individual gaming coach, because terms are negotiated privately and depend on deliverables, exclusivity, and usage rights. Narrowing the point to the platforms named on this page: Twitch, YouTube, and Metafy each publish a revenue share or commission for the payments they process, and none of the three publishes a sponsorship price list for creators (Twitch Official Blog, YouTube Official Blog, and Metafy Help Center).
Sponsored content carries a legal obligation in the US regardless of deal size. The Federal Trade Commission's staff guidance tells influencers to "disclose when you have any financial, employment, personal, or family relationship with a brand" and notes that financial relationships "aren't limited to money," so free or discounted products also require disclosure (FTC, Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers).
Do gaming coaches need a big following before they can charge?
No platform cited on this page publishes a follower minimum for selling coaching itself. The follower thresholds that do exist belong to streaming monetization programs: Twitch's Affiliate Program requires 25 followers, 4 hours streamed across 4 different days, and a 3-viewer average (Twitch Help Center). Brillay sets no follower minimum.
YouTube's thresholds are larger and also unrelated to coaching: the YouTube Partner Program requires 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days (YouTube Help).
| Path | Follower requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Brillay (Paid Questions, Custom Work, Tips) | None | brillay.com/how-it-works, policy as published September 2, 2026 |
| Twitch Affiliate (ads, subs, Bits) | 25 followers, 4 hours streamed on 4 different days, 3-viewer average | Twitch Help Center |
| YouTube Partner Program | 1,000 subscribers + 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers + 10M qualified Shorts views in 90 days | YouTube Help |
| Coaching marketplace listing | Set by the marketplace's own approval process, not a public follower count | Varies by marketplace |
Can a paid question actually replace a booked coaching call?
A paid written question replaces a coaching call only for narrow, well-described problems. A live call earns its price through real-time back-and-forth: watching a student play, adjusting mid-session, and answering follow-ups as they come up. A student who can describe a recurring mistake in writing usually does not need scheduled mutual availability to get a useful answer.
A settings question, a matchup a student keeps losing, or a practice-routine rebuild can be answered asynchronously on the coach's own schedule. Asynchronous answers do not replace structured, session-based coaching for a student who wants ongoing instruction or live observation of their play. Paid direct messages vs. coaching calls covers that trade-off in more detail. Coaches in other niches weigh the same asynchronous-versus-live question — see how it plays out for a dating coach answering text-based profile and messaging questions.
The two sections below describe Brillay's own product. Brillay publishes this guide and sells one of the options compared in it; the claims in these sections are sourced to Brillay's published documentation rather than to third-party research.
Which Brillay offer fits VOD reviews and rank questions?
On Brillay, a written question with no footage fits Paid Questions, while a VOD review that requires a clip or match recording fits Custom Work. Followers pay upfront; you can decline a request. Paid Questions use one written question and one written reply, while Custom Work accepts a file attachment with the request.
With Custom Work, the coach sets a fixed price and a delivery time of up to 5 days, then delivers text plus files and/or a link. The Custom Work listing states exactly what the client will receive. The same Brillay link can also offer a one-time rank-up greeting through Personalized Videos and other clearly priced choices. Each purchase is one-time, not a membership. A pricing walkthrough for VOD reviews and rank-up plans appears in Brillay's own guide to getting paid for gaming coaching.
What does Brillay charge on a coaching payment?
Brillay charges 8% when a follower pays for work and 5% on tips and goals, with no monthly fee and payment-processing fees deducted separately. Standard Stripe US online-card pricing is 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge (Stripe), so a US coach's combined cost is roughly 10.9% + $0.30 per payment.
Against Metafy Core the comparison has a winner rather than a crossover point. Setting the two costs equal — 0.109P + $0.30 = 0.12P + $1.79 — gives P ≈ -$135.45, so Brillay's combined cost is lower on payments of every size, because Metafy's flat $1.79 stays above $0.30 while its 12% also stays above the combined 10.9%.
Read the fee columns with one caveat in mind: the Brillay column is stated all-in because Brillay's fee and the Stripe processing charge are disclosed separately and added here, while Metafy's help center states 12% + $1.79 as a deduction from earnings without saying whether payment processing is included in that $1.79. If Metafy's $1.79 excludes processing, the Metafy column understates the coach's true cost and the gap shown in the table is wider still.
| Session price | Brillay: 8% paid-work fee + Stripe 2.9% + $0.30 (processing included) | Metafy Core: 12% + $1.79 (processing treatment not stated) | Lower stated cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20 | $2.48 | $4.19 | Brillay |
| $30 | $3.57 | $5.39 | Brillay |
| $51.38 | $5.90 | $7.96 | Brillay |
| $75 | $8.48 | $10.79 | Brillay |
| $150 | $16.65 | $19.79 | Brillay |
Two further caveats belong with that table. Metafy Pro's $99 monthly plan takes no percentage at all, so a coach with high monthly volume can beat both columns. And the products are not equivalent: Metafy combines a browsable marketplace with scheduling, while Brillay gives a coach one link to share with clients they already reach.
Frequently asked questions
The questions below cover the credential, attachment, marketplace-versus-direct-link, income-type, and outcome-promise issues that come up most often when a gaming coach starts charging. Each answer states what the named platform's own documentation says, and where a rule is set by the coach rather than by a platform.
Do I need to be ranked highly or certified to charge for gaming coaching?
Coaches need no credential, specific rank, or minimum follower count to enable Paid Questions or Custom Work on Brillay. Coaches can connect their bank through Stripe in 41 payout countries. Coaching marketplaces and communities may set their own approval standards, so describe your actual rank, role, and experience accurately regardless of where you sell.
Can a client attach a match replay or clip to a Paid Question?
No. A request that requires reviewing footage should be set up as Custom Work, which accepts attached files from the client.
Is a coaching marketplace or a direct bio link better for an established coach?
It depends on where the coach's students come from. A coach without an audience may value a marketplace's discovery more than the commission it charges; a coach with a following from streaming or word of mouth is paying Metafy's 12% + $1.79 or Fiverr's 20% seller commission mainly for payment infrastructure they could handle through a direct link instead (Metafy Help Center and Fiverr Payment Terms of Service). The same marketplace-versus-direct-link math shows up for how sales coaches get paid for deal reviews and pitch feedback, where commission-taking platforms compete with the same kind of direct bio-link payment.
What's the difference between coaching income and streaming income?
Coaching income is paid directly for a defined deliverable — a session, review, or written answer. Streaming income is paid by the platform under its published revenue share, such as Twitch's baseline 50/50 subscription split or YouTube's 55% long-form share. A coach can pursue either or both.
Can I guarantee a student will rank up if they pay for coaching?
No. Describe the deliverable you control — a VOD review, a written training plan, a settings audit — rather than promising a competitive outcome that depends on the student's own practice and play. Stating the format, scope, and delivery time clearly avoids implying a result you cannot guarantee.
