How to Get Your First Paying Supporter

The fastest path to your first follower who pays just to support you — no deliverable, no follower minimum — and what to do the moment it happens.

Get paid for this — with Brillay

TikTok Gifts wait for 10,000 followers — why should your first tip? On Brillay there's no follower minimum, so the one follower who wants to thank you can send $5 today.

Brillay is a link in your bio where followers pay you directly for:

TipsPaid QuestionsPersonalized VideosGoalsCustom Work

When a comment says "I wish I could pay you for this," that follower pays as a guest by card with no account in the way, and a Tip leaves nothing owed back — no perk to invent, no follow-up to remember.

No monthly fee, you only pay a small platform fee when you get paid.

Your first paying supporter arrives once three things are in place: a support link visible in your bio, two or three suggested amounts so nobody has to invent a number, and one direct sentence asking people to use it. No follower count or sales history is required, because a supporter pays for work you already gave away. Tips let followers send a one-time thank-you, with nothing for you to deliver and no membership for them to join.

That same first supporter shows up once your amounts or offer prices are easy to understand and you ask directly after publishing something useful — whether what they're paying for is a Tip or a small result you've clearly defined.

No monthly fee, you only pay a small platform fee when you get paid. 8% platform fee when a follower pays for work, 5% platform fee on tips and goals. Card processing is separate. See full pricing details.

A supporter paying to say thank you is different from a follower buying a defined thing: the supporter pays with no deliverable attached. Support with nothing owed back is the Tips offer on Brillay — a one-time payment with suggested amounts, no reply and no delivery required (how it works).

What counts as your "first paying supporter"?

A Tip can be a smaller first decision than buying a deliverable: the supporter chooses an amount, and you owe nothing in return. A Brillay Tip lets the supporter choose a concrete amount such as $3, $5, or $10; compare that amount and the applicable fees with the current official payout terms for each platform you use, such as the Instagram Help Center's Gifts payout page. At those published platform rates, 500 Instagram Stars or 500 Twitch Bits correspond to $5 of platform revenue. For a $5 Brillay Tip, compare your earnings after Brillay's 5% platform fee and separate Stripe processing fee. Once it happens, getting your first five paying followers is mostly a matter of repeating what worked. One bio link that carries every offer: followers pay you as guests by card, at prices you set, whatever format the request takes.

Do you need a certain number of followers first?

No. Brillay applies no follower minimum to Tips or to any other offer, so a creator with ten followers can accept a first supporter payment on exactly the same terms as one with ten thousand. Audience gates belong to platform-native payout programs, not to a direct support link.

YouTube Help states that its supporter-funding tier of the YouTube Partner Program requires 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days (YouTube Help, "YouTube Partner Program eligibility"). TikTok's Creator Academy states that the Creator Rewards Program requires at least 10,000 followers and at least 100,000 authentic video views in the last 30 days. TikTok Support states that Video Gifts, a separate program from Creator Rewards, requires at least 10,000 followers, an account at least 30 days old, and a public video posted in the last 30 days (TikTok Support, "Video Gifts on TikTok"). On Brillay, those same viewers can pay you before you reach any of these thresholds, whether for a written answer, a custom video, a commission, a tip or a contribution toward a named goal.

Twitch Help states that joining the Affiliate Program — the first tier at which a streamer can receive Bits — requires 25 followers, 4 hours streamed, streaming on 4 different days, and an average of 3 concurrent viewers (Twitch Help, "Joining the Affiliate Program"). Instagram publishes no universal follower threshold for Gifts: the Instagram Help Center conditions eligibility on holding a professional account, being 18 or older, living in an eligible country, and meeting Instagram's policies. None of those rules govern a support link a creator hosts elsewhere.

Where should the support link actually go?

Put the support link in your social bio on every platform you post to, then repeat it in the caption or pinned comment of any post that earns an "I wish I could pay you for this" reply. The bio is the one place a visitor already checks, and a link a supporter must hunt for loses the impulse.

You do not have to give up an existing bio link to add one: the Instagram Help Center states that you can add up to 5 websites to your Instagram profile, under Edit profile → Links (Instagram Help Center, "Add a website to your Instagram profile"). A portfolio, a shop, and a support link can therefore sit in an Instagram bio at the same time.

One Brillay link carries every offer you have turned on across every platform you post to, and followers pay with no account needed. That matters most on the platforms where a first supporter appears in a comment thread rather than on your page.

How many suggested amounts should you show?

Make the first choice easy with concrete suggested amounts such as $3, $5, and $10, while still allowing a custom amount. An "enter any amount" box asks a first-time supporter to invent a number from nothing, a larger decision than it looks and an easy point at which to abandon the payment.

Fixed price points are also what the large platforms ship. YouTube Help states that Super Thanks is available at a few different price points for viewers to choose from, rather than as a free-entry amount, and that creators receive 70% of Super Thanks revenue recognized by Google, calculated after taxes and fees are deducted (YouTube Help, "Turn on and manage Super Thanks").

The size of the default matters more than the number of options. In a large-scale field experiment on an online charitable giving platform, Steffen Altmann and co-authors found that the modal positive contribution matched the displayed default amount in every treatment, while defaults had no significant effect on average donation levels.

"Our data show that defaults have a strong impact on individual donor behavior. In each of our treatments, the modal positive contribution invariably corresponds to the default specification." — Steffen Altmann and co-authors, Defaults and Donations: Evidence from a Field Experiment, Review of Economics and Statistics 101(5), 2019

Keep the smallest suggested amount genuinely small, because small-dollar giving is the norm. An AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll of 1,146 U.S. adults, released January 8, 2026, found that 58 percent of crowdfunding donors gave $50 or less on their most recent donation. Single-digit and low-double-digit suggestions sit inside the range people actually choose.

What's the one sentence that actually gets a first tip?

The sentence that works is a direct, specific ask attached to something you just made, not a general "support me" plea. Naming the value a reader just received gives them a concrete reason to act in the moment, while a standing request with no context is easy to scroll past. Ask right after you publish something useful.

  • Weak: "Feel free to support my content if you'd like!"
  • Direct: "If this saved you an hour of trial and error, there's a tip link in my bio — no pressure, just appreciated."

Asking out loud is standard platform advice, not a growth hack. YouTube Help's own guidance to creators on Super Thanks states that "promotion helps show that you value receiving Super Thanks as a creator". A tip link works the same way: the supporters most likely to pay are the ones who already know the option exists.

What if nobody pays the first time you ask?

One unanswered ask is not a signal to stop. Paying an individual online is common but far from universal, so a single caption reaching a fraction of your audience will often produce nothing, and the same link placed in a bio, a pinned comment, and an end-of-video callout reaches many more of the same people.

The size of the pool is measurable. The AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll of 1,146 U.S. adults, released January 8, 2026, found that 21 percent of the U.S. public have ever donated to a crowdfunding campaign such as GoFundMe (AP-NORC). Roughly one in five adults having ever given online means a first ask that reaches a few hundred people can easily land on nobody who has done it before, which is an audience-reach problem rather than proof the offer is broken. When one of the people who has paid online before does reach your link, they pay by card as a guest, with no account to create before the payment goes through. Creators in 41 countries can get paid; followers pay by card from anywhere.

Repeat the ask in more places rather than louder in one place, and keep the offer live while you do — there is no cost to leaving a Brillay page up, since the platform only charges you when a follower actually pays.

What should you do the moment your first supporter pays?

Reply personally and specifically: name what the supporter did, thank them for it, and send a real message instead of an autoresponder. Replying while the payment is still fresh is practical advice rather than a published benchmark — no research sets a correct response window for creator thank-you notes.

Then know when the money lands, because a first payment is not the same as a first payout. Brillay supports creator payouts in 41 countries, and you complete Stripe onboarding before receiving money on Stripe's own timing. Stripe's documentation states that after you successfully receive your first live payment, Stripe typically schedules your initial payout to complete within 7–14 days (Stripe Docs, "Receive payouts"). Stripe's published pricing puts typical US online-card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge (Stripe pricing).

Platform programs hold a first payment considerably longer, because they pay against a balance threshold rather than a transaction. Twitch Help states that a minimum balance of $50 USD is required to receive a payout (Twitch Help, "When Am I Getting Paid?"). Google AdSense Help lists a $100 USD payment threshold for U.S. Dollar payments accounts, including AdSense for YouTube, and YouTube Help states that a creator who reaches that threshold in a given month is paid by the 26th of the following month. For the longer version of turning a first payment into a second one, see how to turn your first supporter into a repeat buyer.

What if you'd rather sell something specific than ask for open support?

A tip does not have to be your first offer. When asking for open support feels awkward, offer one clearly defined result at a fixed price you set. Followers pay before you do the work; you deliver on your own time. On Brillay, the priced offer sits beside Tips with the result, exclusions, and delivery window already published; the buyer submits the brief and pays upfront, so your first commission is an order, not an unpaid “how much?” conversation in your DMs.

Custom Work lets a supporter attach up to five files, and you deliver text plus files and/or a link. For Personalized Videos, the supporter sends written instructions and you deliver one video. Choosing one first rules nothing else out.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about a first paying supporter cover four things: whether a supporter differs from a follower buying a defined deliverable, whether any follower minimum applies, what Brillay charges when a supporter pays, and how to size suggested tip amounts. Short answers follow, with every Brillay mechanic cited to Brillay's own documentation.

Is a "supporter" the same as a customer?

No. A supporter pays with nothing expected in return — a Tip, which requires no reply and no delivery on Brillay. A follower pays for a defined offer, such as Paid Questions, Custom Work, or Personalized Videos. Both are valid first sales.

Do I need a certain number of followers before I can accept a tip?

No. Brillay requires no minimum follower count to enable Tips or any other offer. Platform programs do gate by audience: TikTok's Creator Rewards Program requires at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 authentic video views in the last 30 days, and Twitch Affiliate requires 25 followers plus 4 hours streamed across 4 days with 3 average viewers.

What does Brillay charge to accept a first tip?

There is no monthly fee or setup cost; Brillay takes only its small platform fee on a tip once it is paid, at the tips-and-goals rate in the fee line near the top of this page. Card processing is a separate charge from Stripe, not part of Brillay's fee: Stripe's published pricing puts typical US online-card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge.

How much should I set as the suggested tip amounts?

There is no fixed right number; make the first choice easy with concrete suggested amounts and keep a custom amount available. What is measured: the AP-NORC poll released January 8, 2026 found that 58 percent of crowdfunding donors gave $50 or less on their most recent donation, and Altmann and co-authors found in a field experiment that the modal contribution matched the displayed default in every treatment (Review of Economics and Statistics 101(5)). Start low enough that saying yes is easy, then adjust to what your audience chooses.

When does a first tip actually reach my bank account?

After Stripe onboarding is complete, on Stripe's payout schedule: Stripe's documentation states that after your first successful live payment, Stripe typically schedules the initial payout to complete within 7–14 days. Brillay supports creator payouts in 41 countries, and onboarding must be finished before any money moves.
