No tool charges a fan inside an Instagram or TikTok DM: FanBell, Minnect, Ko-fi, and Beacons all work by redirecting the request to an external payment page. Choose between them on request type, reply format, and platform fee — 12% at FanBell, 20% at Minnect, 0–5% at Ko-fi, and 0–9% at Beacons.
Every fee and plan price below was checked against each company's own pricing, plan, or help-center page in September 2026.

Does any tool charge fans inside an Instagram or TikTok DM?
No. Neither Instagram nor TikTok documents a way for a creator to attach a price to an individual DM reply, so on both platforms the money changes hands on a separate checkout page reached by a link. Meta's commerce help center states that "as of September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram now use website checkout" (Meta Business Help).
TikTok Shop's seller documentation places the charge at the same kind of separate step, stating that listed prices are "exclusive of any applicable Taxes and Fees, which will be calculated and charged at checkout". Instagram's and TikTok's own messaging help pages list only text, photo, video, and voice sharing inside a DM thread, and neither documents a charge or paywall feature for a single reply (Instagram Direct, Instagram messaging help, TikTok direct-message settings).
None of the four tools compared here plugs into your Instagram or TikTok inbox; each publishes its own hosted checkout page that the fan must open to pay, and each states that a payment processor's fees apply on top of its platform fee (FanBell pricing, Minnect FAQ, Ko-fi pricing, Beacons transaction fees). Beacons' own help center puts those processor charges at "2.9% + $.30 per transaction" for Stripe and "3.49% + fixed fee" for PayPal, and Stripe's public pricing page lists the same 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card transaction in the US (Stripe pricing). Phrases such as “monetize your DMs” therefore describe a redirect workflow, not an in-message payment capability.
The workflow is:
- A fan sends a request through Instagram or TikTok.
- You reply with a paid-page link instead of answering for free.
- The fan opens the page, selects an offer, and pays there.
- You deliver the answer through the tool’s supported format.
The DM is where you identify the request; the linked page is where payment and delivery happen. For link placement, saved replies, and reducing drop-off, see how to redirect followers from DMs to a paid link.
What should you consider before choosing a DM-to-paid-link tool?
Weigh five factors: the type of request arriving in your DMs, the reply format the tool supports, the platform fee on each transaction, the monthly cost of the plan that fee belongs to, and how many taps stand between the fan clicking your link and paying. Published platform fees across the four tools span 0% to 20%.
- Request type. A private question, voluntary tip, commissioned service, and product inquiry need different checkout and delivery flows.
- Reply format. Text is usually fastest for asynchronous answers. Video and live calls require more creator time but may suit higher-priced requests.
- Transaction fee. Published platform fees run from 0% on tips on the Ko-fi free plan to 20% per transaction on Minnect, which states in its FAQ that experts keep 80%; those percentages apply to different products and are not like-for-like prices.
- Upfront cost. All four tools can be used at $0/month, and the two plans that remove transaction fees cost $12/month for Ko-fi Gold and $30/month for Beacons Creator Plus.
- Redirect friction. A fan who asked a quick question generally needs a direct checkout and prompt, while calls may require booking and storefront purchases require product selection.
After selecting a tool, how much to charge for DM replies explains how to set the price.
How do FanBell, Minnect, Ko-fi, and Beacons compare?
They differ most on fee and format. FanBell charges 12% per paid transaction and replies by text, Minnect takes 20% and supports text, video, or a call, Ko-fi charges 0% on tips and 5% on shop, membership, and commission sales, and Beacons charges 9% on store sales unless you pay $30/month or more.
| Tool | What a fan pays for | Reply or delivery format | Platform fee | Cost to join |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FanBell | A private question, tip, shoutout, or another paid interaction | Text and a private thread | 12% per paid transaction | $0/month, free to start |
| Minnect | A question answered in the expert’s offered format | Text, video, or live call | 20% per transaction; experts keep 80% (Minnect FAQ) | Free to start an expert account |
| Ko-fi | A tip, shop item, membership, or paid commission | No structured Q&A format; commission delivery is agreed separately | 0% on tips on the free plan; 5% on shop sales, memberships, and commissions (Ko-fi pricing) | $0/month free plan, or Ko-fi Gold at $12/month for 0% service fees |
| Beacons | A digital product, store item, or affiliate offer | Storefront delivery rather than reply-based Q&A | 9% on the Free and $10/month Creator plans; 0% on Creator Plus and Creator Max (Beacons Help Center) | $0/month free plan, $10/month Creator, $30/month Creator Plus, $90/month Creator Max (Beacons Help Center) |
On a $25 paid question, the platform fee alone is $3.00 at FanBell's 12% rate and $5.00 at Minnect's 20% rate, before the payment processor's separate charge — Stripe's US card rate is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction. Fees and plan tiers are set by each company and may change; every figure in this table was read from the linked company page in September 2026.
How does FanBell handle private questions?
FanBell handles a private question asynchronously: the fan pays the creator's set price on a hosted page, submits the question there, and gets a text reply in a private thread with no call to schedule. FanBell charges a 12% platform fee per paid transaction and $0/month.
FanBell states that fans check out as a guest and pay by card through Stripe, with no FanBell account to create and no app to install, and that they pay the full price upfront when they order (how FanBell works). Creators set their price, displayed response-time commitment, and follow-up window, and can decline and refund a request they do not want to answer.
FanBell's pricing page defines creator earnings as the fan payment minus the 12% platform fee minus the payment-processing fee, which is deducted separately, and creator payouts run through Stripe Connect. Paid Private Questions sit on the same page as tips, personalized shoutouts, and other paid interactions, so one link covers every request type.
FanBell's 12% platform fee is 8 percentage points below Minnect's 20% per-transaction take, but it is not the lowest rate on every transaction here: the Ko-fi free plan charges 0% on tips, and Beacons charges 9% on store sales on its Free and $10/month Creator plans.
How does Minnect handle paid answers?
Minnect is a paid-Q&A marketplace: the asker buys the response format the expert offers — text, a short video, or a live video call — and Minnect answers the fee question directly in its FAQ, stating that the platform takes "20% per transaction" and that "experts keep 80%".
Minnect states that starting an expert account is free, that the expert picks the price and controls the schedule, and that payouts follow an 80/20 split (Minnect for experts). Minnect's FAQ also describes the checkout timing: when a user books a call or asks a question, that payment method "is authorized for a 7-day period," funds transfer only once the expert accepts or answers, and the authorization is removed if the request expires.
A creator moving DM requests to Minnect therefore accepts a 20% take rate — $5.00 on a $25 question — in exchange for text, video, and live-call formats on one profile. Minnect's FAQ also directs experts' bank-connection questions to Stripe, its payout partner.
How does Ko-fi handle tips and commissions?
Ko-fi is a tip jar, shop, membership, and commission platform rather than a structured private-question tool: a tip needs no reply, and a commission is delivered on whatever terms the fan and creator agree. Ko-fi's pricing page states that its free plan charges a "0% service fee on tips" and a "5% service fee on Memberships, Shop sales, and Commissions".
One detail matters before you send DM traffic to Ko-fi: Ko-fi's pricing page lists a Standard tier as the "default for new creators" that charges a 5% service fee on all payment types, including tips, in exchange for extra tools. Ko-fi Gold removes service fees entirely — Ko-fi's help center states that Gold "unlock[s] 0% service fees on all payment options for a fixed monthly cost of $12 p/m, rather than the 5% fee".
Ko-fi does not process payments itself: its pricing page states that a creator must connect a PayPal or Stripe account to get paid, and that standard payment-processor fees apply on top of the 0–5% service fee. Ko-fi is the cheapest option here for a voluntary tip at 0% on the free plan, but it offers no structured paid-question flow of the kind FanBell and Minnect provide.
How does Beacons handle requests that are really purchase inquiries?
Beacons is a link-in-bio storefront, not a reply-based Q&A tool, so it fits DMs such as “Where can I buy that?” where the right answer is a product link. Beacons' help center states that its 9% transaction fee "applies to users on the free plan or the $10/month Creator plan".
Beacons removes that fee only on its two most expensive tiers: its help center states that "if you're on the $30/month Creator Plus plan or the $90/month Creator Max plan, there are no transaction fees". Beacons' own help article, last edited 14 November 2025, also names its processors and their charges — Stripe at "2.9% + $.30 per transaction" and PayPal at "3.49% + fixed fee based on the currency of the transaction".
The break-even is arithmetic: Beacons' $30/month Creator Plus plan costs less than the 9% fee once a creator sells more than about $333 of products a month. Either way, Beacons solves a different problem from paid Q&A — it redirects product interest to a storefront rather than charging for the creator's reply.
Which tool fits the requests arriving in your DMs?
Match the tool to the request. Questions needing a private written answer point to FanBell at a 12% platform fee; requests worth a video or live call point to Minnect at 20%; thank-you money points to Ko-fi at 0% on tips on its free plan; and "where can I buy that?" points to Beacons at 9% on store sales below its $30/month tier.
- Choose FanBell when people ask questions that need private text answers and you also want tips, shoutouts, and other paid interactions on one link, at 12% per paid transaction and $0/month.
- Choose Minnect when you specifically want to offer text, video, or live calls and accept its stated 20% per-transaction take rate.
- Choose Ko-fi when most requests are voluntary tips or separately arranged commissions: the free plan charges 0% on tips and 5% on shop sales, memberships, and commissions.
- Choose Beacons when the DM is a product inquiry and a storefront beats a private reply, accepting a 9% transaction fee below the $30/month Creator Plus plan.
You can also use two tools. For example, a creator could use a paid-question page for substantive requests and Ko-fi for voluntary tips.
Whichever tool you choose, the wording of the redirect matters. dm boundary messages creators can copy provides ready-to-send responses, while what to put in your bio to monetize DMs explains how to make the paid link easy to find.
How was this comparison prepared?
FanBell publishes this comparison and has a commercial interest in readers considering its product. Every tool is evaluated on five stated criteria: request type, reply format, published platform fee, plan cost, and fit for a DM-to-paid-page redirect. All 12 fee and price figures on this page were read in September 2026 from the four companies' own pages, plus Stripe's published pricing.
Competitor figures come from primary company documentation rather than aggregators, press coverage, or estimates: Minnect's own FAQ for the 20/80 split, Ko-fi's pricing page and Ko-fi's help center for the 0%, 5%, and $12/month Gold figures (Ko-fi pricing, Ko-fi Help Center), and Beacons' help center for the 9%, $10, $30, and $90 plan figures. FanBell's own figures come from FanBell's pricing and how-it-works pages. Anything not stated on one of those pages was left out rather than estimated.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Venmo or PayPal instead of a purpose-built tool?
You can, and for a one-off tip a payment link is fine, but it does not attach the payment to a specific request, restate the question, set delivery expectations, or give you a built-in decline-and-refund path. PayPal's published US business rates are 2.99% for goods-and-services payments and 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal and Venmo checkout on invoices (PayPal business fees), so a generic link is not automatically cheaper than a purpose-built tool once you add the missing workflow yourself.
Do I need separate tools for questions and tips?
Not necessarily. FanBell places Paid Private Questions and tips on the same page under one 12% platform fee, so a single redirect link covers both. You can also pair a Q&A tool with a separate tip jar — Ko-fi's free plan charges 0% on tips — but then you must choose which link to send for each request.
Does payment happen inside Instagram or TikTok?
No. With all four tools the fan follows a link and pays on the provider's hosted page, not inside the message thread; Meta's commerce help center confirms that Shops on Facebook and Instagram "now use website checkout" as of September 2025. Delivery then happens through the tool's own workflow — a private text thread on FanBell, for example.
Which option has the lowest fee?
No single tool is cheapest for every request type. On tips, Ko-fi's free plan is lowest at 0%; on store sales, Beacons charges 9% below its $30/month Creator Plus plan; on paid fan interactions, FanBell charges 12%; and Minnect takes 20% per transaction. Every one of those platform fees sits on top of a payment processor's charge, such as Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ per US card transaction.
How can you start redirecting paid questions?
Match the request to the tool first: text Q&A and tips point to FanBell, video or live-call answers point to Minnect, voluntary tips point to Ko-fi, and product inquiries point to Beacons. If FanBell fits your DMs, here's the next step: Create your free FanBell page, turn on Paid Private Questions, and the next time someone sends you a question worth answering, reply with your link instead of typing the answer for free.
